Johann de Bruin is a practised mining industry executive and his impressive track record gives Erudite Strategies an enviable position in the African industrial space.

He co-founded Erudite Strategies in November of 2016 following his retirement from DRA Africa – the largest diversified engineering, project management and operations business on the continent with more than 1,000 employees – after the successful completion of a substantial investment transaction.

Johann spent almost 20 years in various leadership roles at DRA, witnessing the mining project portfolio grow to a peak of USD 5 billion including the design and construction of 35 platinum concentrators, 42 coal processing plants and 12 metallurgical plants across multiple commodities. Today, DRA is the largest outsourced operator of metallurgical plants in Africa.

In his capacity as managing director at DRA Africa, a role he held since January 2013, Johann was responsible for over 90% of the group revenue, which peaked at USD 800 million in 2012.

Passionate about stakeholder relationships and delivering projects on time and on budget for his clients, Johann’s substantial understanding of business on the African continent, Australia and Canada is a differentiator for both the organisation and clients. This is evidenced in his positive management of DRA Africa from a founder era through to a corporate entity that now boasts a performance driven culture and the first external shareholder in 30 years.

In addition, he diversified the business into Central, East and West Africa, and steered a globalisation agenda that included two significant acquisitions and a horizontal integration into energy, water and agriculture to create sustainability.

Johann is considered a strong leader by his peers, with sufficient resolve to navigate a substantial business through the cyclical nature of current global economic reality – constantly adapting the business and his team to the fast-paced change. He confidently challenges the norm and the status quo, and is comfortable in a world of substantial change, complexity and uncertainty.

During 25 years of business in the mineral and industrial sectors of Africa, he developed a vast network of relationships built on trust and a reputation for delivery. These relationships are key to the value that he now adds to the industry.

He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, and enhanced his business leadership skills at Cranfield University, England, to augment his technical and engineering skills. Johann currently serves as a member of the University of Pretoria’s Advisory Board to ensure that the curriculum of the Engineering Faculty remains aligned with global standards and practices.
